What is Yoga therapy?
“Yoga therapy is the process of empowering individuals to progress toward improved health and wellbeing through the application of the teachings and practices of yoga” ~ International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT).
We are all unique individuals. Our bodies, experiences, age, physical capabilities, beliefs etc are unique only to you. It makes sense, therefore, to have a yoga practice that is tailored to suit your individual needs. Yoga therapy is a wholistic healing discipline that considers the entire person (body, mind, breath, emotions, behaviours, lifestyle, relationships etc) and utilises all the tools of yoga to develop a personal practice for you. Yoga postures, meditation, breathing techniques, relaxation exercises, life style recommendations, mindfulness, mantra and self reflection, are some of the tools used to restore a feeling of wellbeing.
How does it work?
In a private one-on-one setting the yoga therapist assists you to determine a goal. Each person receives an assessment and from this a tailored practice is developed to move towards their goal. This is done over 3 sessions:
- assessment (discussion and observation of breath and movement),
- development of practice (designed to fit into your daily life)
- review (ensure practice is being done correctly and make adjustments if required).
The initial 3 sessions take place over a two week period, once given your practice, you then do it at home several times so that the review process is accurate.
Once these 3 sessions are complete you then commit to a daily home practice. It is through the dedicated home practice that real changes occur. The home practice is designed to fit into your lifestyle – for example you may decide you can commit to a 15 minute daily practice and so your practice may consist of a just few select movements, a pranayama technique and visualisation, it is not about intensity, rather that the practice is targeted to your needs and goal. You continue with the practice for as long as it feels useful and appropriate. As you change and evolve over time, so too can the practice - follow up sessions are available when you are ready. Yoga therapy is not a short-term treatment but a long-term lifestyle option. It develops self-awareness an empowerment to promote lasting change.
Who is offering Yoga therapy?
Wendy Jones is a trained Yoga teacher and Yoga therapist who began teaching in early 2000’s. She completed 900+ hr teacher training in Chennai, India and 2 x 300 hr Yoga therapy training courses. She teaches in the Tradition of Krishnamacharya, a breath based practice (the breath is integral wellbeing) that promotes physical wellbeing and tranquility of mind. Wendy continues to participate in professional and personal development courses including monthly mentoring and case study discussion with her teacher Ganesh Mohan.
Can you still attend group class?
Of course! It is nice to also enjoy the energy and friendships developed with a group of likeminded people.
Fees
$120 per hour
Expect that the initial assessment will take an hour. The next sessions will vary in time dependent on what the practice entails and level of experience, and will be charged accordingly.

Disclaimer: Yoga therapy does not take the place of medical advice and current treatments, rather it is used as an adjunct that supports the whole person. You may wish to consult your healthcare provider prior to starting yoga.
